Dewormer
Dewormers
Dewormers help remove parasites from your
pet. Prescription Dewormers for dogs and cats can help
eliminates tapeworms, hookworms, ascarids and whipworms.
Chemical control using dewormers is just one part of a complete
parasite control plan.
Forms of
Dewormer are available as paste, pellets, powder and
liquid suspension. Some dewormers
(ivermectin
and febantel) are low volume so are more convenient
to administer. Larger volume dewormers can be messy
in paste form and significant amounts can end up on the
ground if the horse is uncooperative or has food in his
mouth when the paste is given.
Whether or not to
rotate dewormers (switch to a chemically different
product every few months or every year) is a
controversial topic. The Big Rotation Question, rotation
refers to using dewormers from different drug
classifications. The two main reasons given for
rotating dewormers is cost and parasite "resistance".
Alternate dewormers according to your veterinarian's
recommendations.

ingredient Pyrantel Pamoate aid in the removal of
Large Strongyles worms.

Virtually all dewormers are
effective in combatting roundworms.

Daily dewormers can be worthwhile
in grazing horses.
-
There are three main ways of
administering dewormers: Oral paste syringe Feed
additive (powder, liquid, or pellets) Nasogastric
(stomach) tube.
Further research on resistance to dewormers has
shown that resistance (of small strongyles to the use of
benzimidazoles) is neither delayed nor enhanced by
rotation of drug classes.
Research is underway to see if dewormers given
to a horse at a time in a parasite's life cycle when the
parasite is not vulnerable might explain persistent
problems with small strongyles.
