Fenbendazole
belongs to a category
of drugs known as anthelmintics
. Fenbendazole is often
abbreviated "FBZ". This drug is regularly used to
eliminate numerous gastrointestinal parasites from
animals. Fenbendazole is
available over the counter but should not be administered
unless under the supervision and guidance of a
veterinarian. It should also not
be used in animals with known hypersensitivity or allergy
to the drug.
Fenbendazole is
quite effective against roundworms, hookworms, whipworms,
certain tapeworms and parasites called strongyles and
strongyloides. Dogs and cats may
be infected subclinically and show no
signs.
Fenbendazole
is (labeled) for the
removal of the following parasites in cattle: Adult forms
of: Haemonchus contortus, Ostertagia ostertagi,
Trichostrongylus axei, Bunostomum phlebotomum,
Nematodirus helvetianus, Cooperia spp., Trichostrongylus
colubriformis, Oesophagostomum radiatum and Dictyocaulus
vivaparus. It is also helpful against most immature
stages of the above listed parasites. Although not
official, it also has good activity against Moniezia
spp., and arrested 4th stage forms of Ostertagia
ostertagi.
Fenbendazole
is (labeled) for the
removal of the following parasites in horses: large
strongyles (S. edentatus, S. equinus, S. vulgaris), small
strongyles (Cyathostomum spp., Cylicocylus spp.,
Cylicostephanus spp.,Triodontaphorus spp.) and pinworms
(Oxyuris equi).
Fenbendazole
is (labeled) for the
removal of the following parasites in swine: large
roundworms (Ascaris suum), lungworms (Metastrongylus
apri), nodular worms (Oesphagostomum dentatum, O.
quadrispinulatum), small stomach worms (Hyostrongylus
rubidus), whipworms (Trichuris suis) and kidney worms
(Stephanuris dentatus; both mature and
immature).
Although not
official, fenbendazole has been used in cats, sheep,
goats, pet birds and llamas. Fenbendazole is
considered to be harmless to use in pregnant bitches and
is normally considered to be harmless to use in pregnancy
for all species.
Drug Interactions or
Contraindications: Fenbendazole is not recommended to be
given concurrently with bromsalan flukicides due to the
possiblity that it can cause abortions in
animals.

Fenbendazole generally is not effective as a
one-time dose.
Fenbendazole is also effective
against certain parasites of the bronchial tree and lungs
(Aelurostrongylus and Paragonimiasis).
